Curly Hair Routine

As you can probably tell I am a curly girl and therefore like many others, have to go through the struggles of maintaining it. When I was younger around my high school days I had no idea how to tame the fro', it was only until I discovered YouTube videos that catered for my hair type, that I began to follow a specific routine. I do tend to mix and match the products every so often as I don't want my hair to get used to them. I have tried quite a few brands and discovered which ones work best for me, this is a process I think every curly haired girl should go through, in order to establish a thorough hair care routine. Lets get started...

WASHING.

So I only wash my hair once a week, this may sound gross to some but for me the whole washing and drying process is very time consuming, and also by leaving it for a week you are allowing your natural hair oils to nourish your hair. Usually come wash day my hair is in a bun and my curls need revitalising as they are looking limp and lifeless. I begin by obviously taking the bun out, I get into the shower and on this particular day I chose to shampoo my hair with Palmer's non-sulfate & paraben free Moisturising Shampoo, another disclaimer* I only shampoo my hair every two weeks as shampoo can be drying to your hair and obviously I'm all about that moisture gurl! Anyway I shampoo my hair twice using my finger tips in circular motions in order to not damage the scalp but to remove any build-up/bacteria. I wash this the shampoo out until its no longer visible in my hair. I then use my Hawaiian Silky Hydrating Sleek Conditioner, to help distribute the product evenly and get rid of any tangles or knots I used a wide tooth comb, as it wont break my hair. I leave the conditioner in while I wash my body, shave and all that good stuff...I feel leaving it in for a duration is more beneficial as it acts as a hair mask and gives more moisture to my hair. After I've finished washing my body I then wash the conditioner out, it doesn't really matter if all of it doesn't come out. Next its time to squeeze the water out of my hair, I do this by flipping my hair upside down, I squeeze it and then begin gently scrunching it in an upward motion. After this put on my Microfiber Towel* I use this as a normal cotton towel dries out your hair, there really inexpensive but if you can't get your hands on one just use an old t-shirt. Obviously then I get my body towel and exit the shower, I then get dressed leaving the Microfiber Towel on my head just to soak in any excess water.

PRODUCTS.

After I'm fully dressed I take the towel off, as you can see in the picture my curls aren't defined and obviously need to some help. This help comes in the form of products, and to begin I spritz my hair with my water spray (which is water mixed with a little squeeze of my conditioner). I do this as I feel the other products sink in better with a little added moisture, I then begin to rake in with finger my Organics Olive Oil Leave-In Conditioner (which smells so fresh), I apply this by starting at the bottom gradually working to the top of my hair. Once I feel this is evenly distributed I add my Body shop Brazil Nut Define & No Frizz Cream (literally smells like icing sugar), I apply this mainly at the crown and front of my hair as I feel this is where I suffer the most frizz. Finally to lock in all this moisture, I added my Vatika Black Seed Oil, which I only use a coin sized amount of to use on the ends and my roots, to prevent them from splitting, and with what I have left I just put over the rest of my hair.

DRYING.

Finally all the products are in my hair, now its time for the most annoying part which is waiting for it to dry...As I rarely use heat on my hair I don't use a blow dryer or diffuser and so I let it dry naturally by air-drying. This can take up to 4 hours for me, which as I stated at the beginning this is why I only wash it once a week its just too time consuming, but it's worth it. However a bit of advice if you did want to diffuse or dry your hair with heat, make sure the setting is on cool and on the lowest one, this reduces the amount of heat and also the damage. After its all dry it should look something like this if not better...

I hope this helped anyone who has curly hair, and gave you some inspiration/tips on how to tame it. I would definitely recommend going on YouTube as you can find videos which go more in depth and its something visual to follow.

Thank you so much for reading & until next time,
Kiana

  1. How would you rate your conditioner? I always consider buying it but never do. Have you tried any other Hawaiian Silky products?

    1. I've purchased the conditioner 3 times and every time I go to the shop to buy it there's only ever 1/2 left, so it's definitely a popular product. I really like it I feel it makes my hair feel a lot softer and it helps define my curls, it is a product to invest in due to it being £5 but it lasts me a good 3 months so its works out cheap. I haven't tried any of the other products in the range, but when I was in the shop yesterday the shop assistant recommended the Hawaiian Silky Hair Mask, but that was £7.99 so maybe I'll buy it next time. Hope this helps :)
