Uni Series: Studying Forensic Psycology.
To continue my 'Uni Series' I asked one of my best friends Daisy for an interview. I asked her a few questions about studying Forensic Psychology at UCLAN in Preston for the past two years.
Me: What made you want to study forensic psychology?
Daisy: Reading books and watching TV programmes first made me interested then when I studied it at college I decided it was something I would like to have as my career.
Me: When you were applying and searching for courses how did you narrow it down to forensic psycology?
Daisy: Forensic psychology was the path that interested me the most, but I also chose it because it includes the basics of general psychology too.
Me: What made you choose UCLAN over other universities you visited?
Daisy: It just felt right when I went for the open day, I liked Preston as a place to live, the course there seemed interesting and it had a good reputation, and the lecturers were knowledgeable in their field but also friendly and not patronising like at some other unis I visited.
Me: What do you enjoy most about the course?
Daisy: Probably the fact that even though everyone knows how important our time there is and works hard, it still feels casual and I never feel pressured nor am I made to feel like what I'm doing is not good enough.
Me: What kind of assesments do have to complete?
Daisy: Exams, coursework, lab reports, presentations and we also had to make a portfolio in first year
Me: What does a regular weekly schedule like for you on your course. How many hours of lectures and seminars?
Daisy: Around 10-12 hours of lectures and 2 hours of seminars or workshops.
And sometimes a 1 hour online session.
Me: What kind of moduels can you choose from?
Daisy: In first year you can choose a module from anywhere in the uni but in second and third year they are all psychology based, for example, educational or occupational psychology.
Me: What is it like living in Preston?
Daisy: I love it, it's like a smaller version of Manchester. Plenty shops and places to eat, and also some really good places to go on nights out.
Me: How does first year compare to second year?
Daisy: It was good academically, like it was easier and there wasn't as much pressure, but it was also awkward like the first time being away from your parents, trying to impress a load of new people you've never met before. Whereas second year is harder, but you feel more comfortable because you're living somewhere you've chosen to live, you're used to living away from family and you've settled with your friends. So in that respect second year is much better
Me: What's the favorite thing you've learned about so far?
Daisy: Learning about the way criminals think and how to try and change the way they see things.
Me: Finally, what kind of career would you like after your degree?
Daisy: I would like to work in a high security setting either with criminals or mentally ill people working to try and help them and change their lives for the better.
Thanks to Daisy for letting me ask her the questions about her degree. More of these to come in the future!
Thanks for reading,
