This week has been crazy for us, not only did we get the chance to go to a free festival, but we also got to meet one of our favourite YouTuber's/Bloggers, but more about that next week! Due to Bekka being an absolute genius and bargain queen, she was the brains in this instance who initially found out about the festival on Twitter. We couldn't believe it at first because in this day and age nothing is free, but boy were we wrong! We managed to take a lot photos of the artists and obviously a few cheeky selfies, even though it was pouring down with rain (which we stood in for 8 hours). Anyway here is mine and Bekka's thoughts about the event...
Can we just have a moment to appreciate the festivals security...due to us getting there quite early they definitely entertained us until it started. One of them asked me if I could go and get him a cuppa coffee, so being the little maid I am of course I obliged. Let's say he was very grateful for this gesture as he returned the favour by providing us with waterproof ponchos, which me, Bekka & Bekka's dad (newest member of our clique) were extremely thankful for. Just a quick disclaimer - we had the best view ever as we were right at the front. I'm going to be honest with you the first couple of acts weren't my type of music taste, but as soon as the Hoosiers came on it brought back memories. They sang classics such as 'Goodbye Mr A', 'Cops & Robbers', 'Choices' and of course 'Worried about Ray'. Also to promote their new and upcoming album they sampled some of the tracks. They were amazing, the lead vocalist Irwin Sparkes was outstanding and definitely worked the stage.
On to the next one, who was a blast from the past, the incredibly handsome Lemar, couldn't believe it when he came on stage sporting his afro, and in all black attire. His voice was just how I remembered it, so soulful as he sang 50/50, Invincible, If There's Any Justice and some others. He again is in the process of releasing a new album which is due to drop in early 2015, so extremely excited for that! Raleigh Ritchie was the next performer, I didn't really know him but I remember Bekka raving about him after she went to Wireless, and she was totally right, he didn't an amazing set and got the crowd jumping with him. As soon as I got home I checked out some of his songs and learned that he had just been on tour supporting Kendrick Lamar, of whom I love, so now I really like him. The band MO came on after RR and I've heard a lot about them and listened to quite a few of their songs, they were definitely crowd pleasers as they got us interacted. Also they were the only ones to give out free wristbands which I thought was quite a cute touch.
On next was a home-grown artist, proper scouser, Marsha Ambrosius I thought she was very talented had a bit of an Alicia Keys vibe, with the funky hairstyle and faithful electronic keyboard. Her performance was the longest out of everyone's and I enjoyed it until a fight broke out but Marsha herself resolved that situation as she spoke her mind on the mic. Then finally it was the turn of the long awaited Neon Jungle, who performed their major hits 'Louder' and 'Braveheart', they were as predicted just amazing, all their outfits were on point and Asami in particular was looking incredibly flawless. However they did suffer a few technical difficulties as well as another fight breaking out, but apart from that all was good. Then it was the beautiful Foxes turn to wow the crowd with her beauty and voice, she was okay not really my cup of tea but I know that Bekka loves her.
They clearly saved the best till last as everyone was up and jumping when DJ Fresh came on, he had a little accomplice this MC Mike I think his name was. They were like a dynamic duo as everyone song he put on made the crowd go wild, it was definitely the perfect was to end the day.
Bekka:
As per usual Kiana pulled even at a festival but not an audience member a security guard. As ya do. The first few warm up acts were alright Ghostchant was an electronic techno kind of vibe. Pretty chilled long beats with two tracks featuring vocals it was alright, I'm into some techno but it wasn't my cup of tea. The Tea Street Band my dad liked they were also okay again didn't float my boat but a band from Liverpool.
Then came the Hoosiers who really got the crowd going despite the rain it was really fun and got me all nostalgic thinking back to being a young tween bouncing about in my room to Cops and Robbers. The new stuff they gave us a snippet of has a similar vibe to the old stuff however, they have a new band member. The sound is a little bit more mature but still features catchy lyrics. My favorite was fidget brain.
Lemar rocked it doing a cover of Pharell's Happy to get the crowds vibe up at this point we were drenched the emergency ponchos weren't in action yet. He knew how to work the stage and had such a good stage presence, really got us up and dancing and singing. Crowd involvement is a big must especially when it's pouring it down. Again Lemar has new stuff in the pipeline and gave us a few teasers, still the same R&B with soulful vocals just again a more mature and progressed kind of sound. He finished on "If there's any justice" me and Kiana just turned and looked at each other in complete surprise because we'd been waiting all of his set for this song.
Raleigh Ritchie was next after being front row for him twice I can only repeat what I've said previously. His vocals are the same on recording as they are live and you don't get that with many artisits now. His soulful voice really hits home and gave me goosebumps when singing stronger than ever and my favorite bloodsport. He's a real show man and bounces about the stage to keep the crowds energy strong. At one point I was sure he was going to use the microphone lead as a skipping rope! Check him out on his tour if you're interested, definitely worth seeing.
Alexa Goddard followed being signed to Jay-Z's record label we're waiting for this girl to blow up. Her youtube channel is a big success, and her cover of drunk in love had me grinding. Her tracks Marilyn and So There are very catchy tunes which I expect will be in the top 20 very soon, played repetitively on the radio.
M.O were great as well kind of a more urban version of Neon Jungle in my opinion with their track Dancing on my own, now being firmly on repeat. Flawless vocals and harmonies.
Neon Jungle, what can I say I've seen these girls for the second time this summer and once again the vocals were flawless. Braveheart got the crowd jumping so much and really helped build an atmosphere for DJ Fresh, with it being a song full of bass you couldn't help but bounce. Tops off to the girls for handling the fight the way they did. Which broke out during the middle of louder. How do you even think of fighting to a ballad like that like really? Jess spoke out saying stuff like that shouldn't ruin the rest of ours positive vibe, which was a great call and settled the audience a little.
The glorious Foxes appeared next. (If your a foxes fan you'll see what I did there). I saw her at the main stage at wireless and she was flawless then. She played tracks off of her album. But this time didn't play clarity which I really wanted her to do but ah well I've seen it once already live! Hehe. She worked the stage like last time being literally a little fox slinking from one side to the other before you have time to get your camera out and capture her. Her vocals were stunning, she did however sound a little hoarse probably from doing all the shows recently, still gave a glorious performance (okay I'll stop now.)
Then came my favourite DJ Fresh. Although he didn't interact with the crowd his MC did all the work for him whilst he concentrated on giving us the tunes we all know and love. I only got one decent picture of him because I was jumping up and down that much especially to bounce. He ended playing his new track featuring Ellie Goulding flashlight which is one of my gym tracks soooo good to see it live.
Over all a fab day and with it being free it made the experience even better. Standing in the same spot at the front for 8 hours once again in wellies with my best friend in a muddy field in Sefton Park what more could ya want on a bank holiday monday?
What did you do with your bank holiday monday?
