I'm very, very lucky and thankful to be in a situation where I can work full time for a few weeks during the summer to build up funds for the following year, allowing me to focus on my academic work. I moved out of my university halls on the 7th of June and started work on the following monday. I had one week off recently but since the 9th of June I've been in work. I had to book two days off to allow myself to go to wireless festival with my friend and so have had a week and 2 days off so far of my whole summer holiday.
So here's my daily routine:
Wake up at 6AM
Get to work for 7:30
Start work at 8AM
Work until dinner at 1pm half an hour break for your lunch
Start work at 1:30pm again until 4:30pm
Rinse and repeat for another 4 days.
As you can see I'm working for 8 hours a day. I work in a warehouse packaging goods, I get a flat box the size of a lipstick box and assemble the box place the item inside do 20 then package 20 of those boxes in a carton. Again rinse and repeat until you're doing 2,000 a day.
It's easy-ish work, it's mind numbing and repetitive when you've been doing it for 8 weeks.
makes me think of the ritualistic theatre I wrote one of my drama essays on. In a way it allows you time to think and reflect on things, and forces you to want to excel and work hard on your degree; or else like my dad and work mates say "You'll get a shit job like this". But it's not prison (no OITNB here) you're allowed brew brakes all the time and my work buddies are fortunately hilarious, so there's banter every day which makes the job interesting. The radio plays in the background and we often fight over stations. I was lucky enough to meet and become friends with a girl who also went to university in Liverpool (small world after all). So we exchanged war stories about our nights out.
The obvious pros is the money. Due to me working full time hours the money is very good which I'm grateful for and just pays off for the hard work, and will pay for concerts, clothes, nights out (vodka isn't free) and festival tickets.
The cons are I haven't really had a summer, I've spent time with friends when I can mainly at night as soon as I get home from work. It's hard when all your friends at home aren't working and you feel like a myther asking them to come meet you because you're just exhausted, but still want and value their company. Basically you don't wanna be a lonely ignornant prick and making plans around working is hard, very hard. I haven't been on a shopping trip with Kiana in a long time.. Also having a boyfriend and trying to juggle spending time with him friends and family as well as time for yourself and reading for your uni course. Is very hard.
So theres your little glimpse into my summer job.
Hope you enjoyed this post.
Have you been working this summer?
Thanks,
Bekka
