University Serise: Flatmates.

So you've just got your results and you've been accepted into your uni or gone through clearing. You're starting to buy the stuff you need for your new adventure in a new city, moving away from home for the first time. You're hoping your flatmates will be these awesome people and you'll all gel and have the best time ever at uni. There'll be no arguments or loud noises it'll be a little piece of heaven. Sorry to burst your bubble honey, that just ain't so.

You may get lucky and land some awesome flatmates you genuinely get along with that aren't ass holes. If you're the opposite like me and weren't exactly besties with your flatmates it's not the end of the world.

First of all join your uni's freshers page on facebook if you haven't already. There's normally a group and a page join and like them both. I posted my flat number and block asking who was in my flat and found out 3 of the 5 and we got talking before we got there which helped break the ice and set my anxious mind at ease. I lived with 3 other girls and a boy excluding me (poor lad). We pre-drank in the kitchen to get to know each other but didn't end up going out with each other. We all split off and talked to different people. I knew a girl from home and went out with her and her flatmates who I instantly gelled with.

If you go out with your flatmates on the first night of your freshers which you probably will STAY TOGETHER. Or with at least one person. Take each other into the toilet cubicle if you have to after all at some point this year they'll see you indecently why not start early? You're drunk anyway it's an excuse.

People will no doubt have boyfriends or friends over, so get used to hearing a bed move and moaning sounds. You will hear one flatmate at some point having sex with either their boyf or a one night stand. You'll get over it and it's banter for in the kitchen. However, DO NOT SLEEP WITH YOU'RE FLATMATE. You loose all dignity and when playing never have I ever at pre-drinks it will be brought up 24/7. Biggest no go ever. Not only is it awkward for you two and the rest of the flat, just save yourself the drama and the rest of it. No amount of tequila or wine can justify this dick move.

Your cutlery and food will go missing, make sure you have spares or some food in your room just in case this happens. Or you're screwed living off your mates like I had to when my food was nicked and had no money left to buy any cause it was the end of term. I went to uni with 4 forks and came back with 1. Where the others went, god knows. Spare cups and glasses as well. If you have pre-drinks or a flat party glasses will go missing so just make sure you've got enough to last you. Or do what we did and nick em from your local pub.

There will be fights or arguments someone will leave the kitchen messy and there will be food stuck to your cooker that looks nasty. Someone will steal your milk and you have none left for a brew, or no one will take the bins out and there's a lot of flies in the kitchen. I didn't really have this problem as most of my room mates were very clean. Minus the one who got kicked out. Someone will nick your alcohol if you leave it in the kitchen. Vodka is expensive hide that shit in yo' room fool.

People will always bitch and talk behind each others backs, if you hear one room mate talking smack about the other. Don't reply or respond, leave the room, or just change the subject. You don't need drama in the flat when you've got enough stuff on your plate already, having to adjust to moving out and dealing with referencing. The last thing you need is someone banging on your door asking why you said their cooking's shit.

Get used to not only hearing sex noises but doors slamming people screaming outside as they go for a night out. It's first year, a lot of people will let loose and try to reinvent themselves. There's this new independence because their parents or gaurdians aren't there to say no. So yes, people will be loud and annoying. But it's first year, freshers year is the year you go to a club the next day and attend lectures hungover or still drunk from the night before (something I did).

Just be prepared for things to not be sunshine and rainbows, it's your first year so have fun enjoy yourself and avoid drama!

Hope this helps,
Bekka
