Uni Serise: The Dangers of Facebook's 'Check In'.

Today's topic is the dangers of social media especially the add location and 'check in' features on Facebook. You may know this already due to common sense but others don't know that by sharing every moment of their existence on social media can actually be putting themselves at risk.

So here’s a few things to avoid if you didn’t know already or share this post to a friend who tweets, instas and facebooks their Iced Frappe at Starbucks on *Insert generic street name here*.

1.     Don’t check in every time you go to a club or restaurant with your girls. Sure it’s great to let your virtual ‘friends’ you haven’t spoken to since high school you’re loving life whilst grinding in a stick bar in Gay Village but by doing so you’re letting those 500 friends know you’re exact location and that you’re drinking. So just be safe and make sure if you do check in somewhere you’re with a friend or in a safe environment with a lot of people. Because now the whole internet knows your location especially if you repost on less private apps like Instagram unless you have your profile set to private anyone anywhere can access your feed and see where you are if you tag yourself in at a location on your photo.

2.     Don’t tweet facebook or Instagram 2 weeks till I’m away in Greece for 2 weeks yay 2 days blah blah. A holiday count down allows people on your feed or if you’re profile isn’t set to private any old John, Dick and Harry know your house is empty for two week. You come back off your jollies to an empty house because you’ve advertised to burglars that your house is empty for x amount of time. You might as well have put an advert on Gumtree or Ebay saying come steal my stuff.

3.     Finally, just be wary. Whatever you put online is saved on a server somewhere and just because that snapchat of your boobs or other private areas only lasted 6 second dosen’t mean someone hasn’t screenshot it and revenge is sweet after a horrible break up. I always think if I don’t want my parents to see this or employers then I’m not posting it online. We all have an electronic footprint now so just be careful when ranting on twitter or tumblr because it may haunt you when you need a job and can’t get one because what you said 4 years ago when you were annoyed and 16 they find offensive.
Stay safe on social media guys remember to use protection.
