10 things to do this summer before you start University

As a student who’s just completed her first year here’s a list of the things I did and wish I’d done last year in order to make my start easier and just life at uni in general.

1.       If you already know you’ve been accepted into your university of choice email tutors or anyone about acquiring your reading list. The sooner you have it the more time you have to read it rather than cramming the night before your seminar. You’ve got all this time you might as well start now and make life easier especially as during fresher’s week you’ll be too hungover to even stomach looking at a page, the words will move. So start now!

2.       Go to your library or have a look in Waterstones or on amazon for some cheap books that you think could link in well with your course. So if for example English I found a cheap copy of Great Expectations by Dickens and read that, luckily it was on my reading list so I’d already read it!

3.       Keep reading, even if you’re going to be doing geography. You’ll have to read journal articles and case studies so you need to practice reading whether a trashy magazine or 50 shades of grey. Reading is like exercise the more you do the fitter your brain gets and the faster you can read.

4.       Make some memories with friends and take lots of pictures you can fill your wall with when you get to your blank generic room in September. You’ll want to make it your own, so take some selfies with mates and go to ASDA or Tesco and print them off. It’s pretty cheap or if you have a decent printer go to the £shop and get some photo paper.

5.       Sort through your clothes, get rid of old stuff. If you haven’t worn it in the past 6 months you won’t wear it in the next 6 so donate it to your local charity shop.

6.       Divide your clothes into winter and summer you don’t want to take a lot of summer stuff with you to uni when it’s winter.

7.       Start shopping for some of your stuff now. There will be offers on saucepans and cutlery all year around then come august people rush to stores to buy all their stuff, when stores raise prices. Be smart shop around, places like ASDA, home bargains do cheap and cheerful kitchen stuff after all you only need a simple frying pan you’re not Jamie Oliver.

8.       Every time you go shopping start stocking up on essentials like soap shampoo body wash tooth paste and mouth wash. You might think yeah but this isn’t important it is when you’re having to debate a night out cause you need to buy shampoo after running out. If you start now it’ll make life so much easier in September, just find a spare box and place them in there and take them to uni with you or when returning at weekends restock on what you need.

9.       When you find out what uni you’re going to chances are it will have the fresher’s page on Facebook. Join it talk to people who might be on your course or living in your block. The more people you become friendly with now the easier and less daunting it is when you get there, because you already know some people as awkward as it may be.

10.   Enjoy your freedom and time off. Your first year may count for nothing towards your degree (lucky you mine counts as 10%). You still have to put a lot of work into it. It’s a big step up from btec or A-levels so enjoy this free time with friends and family. When you’re at uni it’s a completely different world and you’ll probably be home sick at first. So appreciate the home cooked meals and the milk being constantly in the fridge not having to do your own washing. All of that will be a thing of the past.

Hope this helps,
Bekka.
